Key Words: Mind Mapping, Roundtable, Writing Descriptive Text Ability. Writing as one of the four skills has always been as a part of the syllabus in teaching of English. One of the goals of teaching writing is the student can write appropriately and effectively in many kinds of genre, such as descriptive text, procedure, narrative, recount, etc. 

The techniques presented as a solution in this research about writing ability are Mind Mapping and Roundtable technique. There are two problems of the study, (1) Is there any significant different using Mind Mapping and Roundtable technique to improve students’ writing descriptive text ability? (2) Which one is better to improve students’ writing descriptive text ability by using Mind Mapping and Roundtable technique? The objectives of this research are: (1)To know whether Is any significant different using Mind Mapping and Roundtable technique to improve students’ writing descriptive text ability. (2) To know which one is better to improve students’ writing descriptive text ability by using Mind Mapping and Roundtable technique. The method of investigation is held through quantitative experimental research. Research design that will be used in this research is quasi experimental design. The population this research is the students at the tenth grade of SMA Kartikatama Metro in Academic Year 2013/2014 that consist of 88 students. In taking sample, the researcher used the cluster random sampling. The data collecting techniques the researcher used are pre-test, treatment, and post-test. There are two instruments in this research, the first one is Pre-Test and the second one is Post-Test. Based on the data analysis, the researcher uses ttest formula. The researcher got the result of thit is 4.02 and ttable is 2.02. It means that thit > ttable. And the criterion of ttest is Ha accepted if thit > ttable. So, Mind Mapping technique is better than Roundtable technique to improve students’ writing descriptive text ability at the tenth grade of SMA Kartikatama Metro Academic Year 2013/2014.The teacher expects English teacher use Mind Mapping technique in writing descriptive text ability, so the students feel fun and enjoy in following learning process."
